’Tis the season to save a life!

​Glen Thomas Newman died on Tuesday, October 29, 2013. He was 57 years old. Glen was born November 24, 1955, in Memphis, TN and moved to Atlanta, GA in 1969 with his parents John and Miriam Newman. He was a well-known deck builder, with his own company, Newman Construction, specializing in beautiful, unusual and imaginative decks throughout the area north of Atlanta. Glen died suddenly of a heart attack at the home he built in Hall County, Georgia. He loved animals and was a dedicated volunteer with the Whiskers Project, a nonprofit cat rescue organization. In addition to his parents who live in Gainesville, GA, he leaves a sister, Sherri Janice Newman of Lula, GA and a brother and sister-in-law, John R. and Cindy Lynn Newman of Cumming, Ga. He also leaves a son, Eric Newman of Olympia, WA, and a daughter, Lauren Gilbert of Zionsville, PA. An older brother, Charles Paul Newman of Lawrenceville, GA, preceded him in death January 9, 2004. His dear friend and companion, Victoria Lindsey, was with him when he passed. Glen wished to be cremated and preferred that there not be any memorial service. He was dearly loved and will be greatly missed.

​Back in Black — the national campaign dedicated to finding great homes for black cats and dogs — is back for a third lifesaving year!

Every day around 9,000 dogs and cats are killed in shelters in America. Black animals are among the most overlooked adoptable pets. We all know that amazing pets come in every color, but strangely, pets in black often wait longer than their lighter-colored counterparts to get adopted. Back in Black is a nationwide campaign to increase adoptions of black and mostly black dogs and cats. Back in Black is sponsored annually by Best Friends Animal Society and held November 1–30.

During the campaign, Whisker Project will reduce adoption fees for black and mostly black cats. Adopt one qualifying cat, and get a second cat’s adoption fees waived!
